Final piece I had shown in class.

Very final piece.

I have decided to change the colour tone back to the first mock up I have had, in order to keep the antique atmosphere in the image. As I had mentioned in class critique, I hope to create the scene to be look like having myself walking into an old photo, therefore, I have added a to it. I have considered many different kind of antique frames, however, typical frames always make the whole image heavy after I put them on. Therefore, I chose a light frame in order to approach the joyful feelings of walking into old days.

I almost felt I was doing yoga in the tunnel.

I had a serious hatchback after I done all the pasting stuff. haha

Here are all the texts I had made in the tunnel; they were based on the idea of providing adults with some activities to do in the tunnel. and~ HEY WATCH YOUR BACK!!

Here is another one rather than the previous two I had shown in my blog.

I was thinking of putting a ashtray vinyl at the non-smoking area which is in front of our school. Although there is a red sign saying “no smoking”, there are still a bunch of smokers gathered. Therefore, I was trying to make fun if this phenomenon; putting an ashtray right beside to the clear “no smoking” red sign.

DO YOU TRUST ME?

As I mentioned in class, trust is something very important in a good friendship. I keep asking “Do you trust me?” as a transition for the repetition of falling, I literally wonder if my friends trust me although I know literal promise dose not really mean anything. Lip-Synch is a little ironic; I ask people “Do you trust me?” with other people’s voice could be very obviously untrustworthy, Lip-Synch is representing that people sometimes hiding their inner minds and pretending they are adapting well of those social activities (such as making friends).

I therefore decided to go further with the the idea trust in my video project.  Trust fall, is a game that I can think of in order to test or to demonstrate trust. I then ask few of my friends playing this game and see the different reactions they might have while they are falling.

Playground is somewhere that I used to be very excited every time my parents brought me there when I was a kid; it is also a place that I seldom go after I grow up, and most of the times I go there are with my friends not my parents anymore. Therefore, I want to focus on this transition of playground memory.

I choose tunnel to be my focal point is because, different to slides or other facilities, we do not feel embarrassed with our giant bodies when we staying in there. In tunnel, as a private space, girls sometimes gossip, teenagers sometimes date their girlfriend or boyfriend, adults escape from their responsibility staying in tunnel revisit their childhood fantasy. Echo is also an interesting effect that makes everyone laugh after talking, singing, or screaming in there.

Going green is an issue that we have concerned for quite a while, however, people still use disposable tableware mostly when they dinning out.

Granvillie Island Public Market, a major tourist destination in Vancouver, draw about 10.5 million people each year, full of restaurants and food stands all create wastes. Therefore, we should start educate all the customers being green from bringing their own tableware.

The numbers around the spoon business hour of the public market, a sort of a remainder for people to bring their own tableware all the time with them.

Also, I believe having this sign pasting at the lower window is more aware for people when they actually sit down for their meal.

*glisten) HIVE is part of CODE Live 2 (Cultural Olympiad’s Digital Edition), Vancouver, Feb 4-21, 2010.

*glisten HIVE is an interactive installation of text-based animations and sound about animal consciousness. The project was produced collaboratively by artist Julie Andreyev, Simon Overstall, Hyuma Frankowski, Derek Ing, Dennis Rosenfeld, Sandra Hanson.

This project uses Twitter as a medium to reach the community, asking viewers to either imagine themselves as animals or to guess what is in their pet’s mind. In this way the viewer is invited to imagined  a brand new point-of-view expressing the thoughts of their animals with words to the world.

I like the idea of having this project be interactive, it successfully removes the incomprehension between audiences and artists and leads people to “rethink” the relationship between animals and human beings.

For general audiences, it is difficult to understand contemporary art, they feel far from the arts. Maybe the gap between viewers and artists is due to the fact that some art pieces are specifically related to the personal experiences of artists or some artists express their thoughts in abstract terms. This has the effect narrowing down the possibilities of communicating with audiences. However, *glisten HIVE, discusses a common topic with the whole community, constructed by word. Somehow one is able to comprehend the reversed, rotating sentences, different font sizes and still be able to understand a clear concept of animal consciousness. From my point of view, the unclear text is the best way to demonstrate animal expression. We usually try to “read” the emotion of animals, to “feel” the feelings animals have. However, those conclusions are still “our” feelings, not theirs.  This is because we treat pets as our family members, and family is always the closest. Therefore, we believe that our animals are using the same language with us. Moreover, the bell-sound from installation, to me, it alerts us to animal interests. The collar, now, is an indispensable item for pets, but we, as human beings, are not aware that we are actually treating dogs and cats in an unnatural way.

Both imagery and sound are  well-integrated; standing in front of a transparent screen in a dark room without any distraction, it really dragged me into the messages or the concept the artists wanted the public to think about. I think the unclear text was also a good way to let audiences think about their own words from the inspiration of *glisten HIVE.

Digital art is a new generation of art in world; digital interactive art is even fresher. This project is not only has interactive conversations with local viewers but also with the global community. People from anywhere are connected by the internet. Their messages are showing on the same screen in one room at the same time. As an audience member, having something change because of my input makes me feel important. Speaking or communicating is something we do everyday but we rarely notice it. As a student who is going to concentrate in DIVA, *glisten HIVE shows me the possibilities and the potential of interactive art, inspiring me to explore more in the future.
